Carmen Elaine Gilliam
January 6, 1961 - March 9, 2018
Born on January 6, 1961 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. William Wilmore, Sr., Presiding Elder Thomas Banner and Ms. Joyce Alice. Carmen at age 57 years old, from Wilmington, Delaware transitioned to her spiritual home on March 9, 2018, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, Delaware surrounded by her loved ones. Carmen attended Bethlehem Elementary School, Bethlehem Township, Ohio and graduated from Kennett Consolidated Schools, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. After high school, she attended Airline School. She further her education by attending Dawn Institute and became a Certified Nurse Assistant. Later, she graduated from Harris Institute, Wilmington, Delaware and was certified as a Medical Assistant. Carmen worked at Labcorp for the last 6 years. She loved her work as a phlebotomist and was known as the one stick wonder. Her expertise was demonstrated in her precision in drawing blood. She worked at Women’s, Infant and Children (WIC) Program. She forged many relationships not only with her coworkers but even with her clients. Inasmuch, Carmen went to work and became ill at home. She had a strong worth ethic, no doubt from her foster parents, who rarely took a sick day in their entire employment career. Carmen loved being a mother. She had a special bond with her son, Keith, Jr and would often fix him a home cooked meal. He loved being with his mother because she could put his heart at ease. Carmen and Ruthie had such a strong and loving relationship. It would not be uncommon for others to think they were sisters. Carmen’s biggest cheerleaders were her children. Carmen loved being a grandmother. She would often be at her grandson’s, Dyson and Aiden sport events. She could be heard on the sidelines cheering on their behalf. However, she was also blessed with her first granddaughter, Layla, who is the official princess of the family. As a child, Carmen was a member of The Supreme Council of the House of Jacob. It was there that she learned how to play the drums. She loved fishing from her childhood days. She later joined Joshua Harvest Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Derrick Johnson. Carmen is survived by her loving wife, Paula Long-Gilliam, Paulsboro, New Jersey and the entire family. She is also survived by her mother, Senior Mother Ruth Banner, Coshocton, Ohio; stepfather, Herman Mickens. Her marriage with Keith Bryant; three children; namely Ruth (Dennis) Scott, Townsend, Delaware, Crystal Davis and Keith Bryant, Jr., Her sisters, Sharon L. Banner-Gordon, Wilmington, Delaware; Ginger Gwinn, Chester, Pennsylvania; Christine (Steven) Gilliam, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,Her brothers, William (Rezzi) Willmore McClure, Norristown, Pennsylvania; Michael Gilliam, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Her Goddaughter, Shareese R. Reeves. Carmen is survived by a host of relatives, friends, and coworkers which are too many people to list. Carmen’s very special friend, Michelle, who have been friends for many years. She had a lifelong friendship with Becky Reeves, lasting more than 50 years. Additionally, much gratitude to Minister Josie Allen, who was with Carmen when she became ill. You went to the hospital with her until the family could be reached. We, the family will always be thankful and find consolation that she was not alone.
